Druv

A peasant revolt in 1400 in Sussex, ceremonial wedding use in 1900, and onwards to a present day practice of holding aloft burning letters during firework festivals in Lewes.

The text ‘We wunt be druv’ inscribed on English, ceramic, Sussex Pigs presented an amazing link to people and place which inspired me to design and make an object for the present day. Used to toast the bride with alcohol, the phrase ‘we wunt be druv’ meaning we won’t be pushed around.

I made a steel pig plate rack. I made a functional, useful, plate rack which, empty or full, resembles a pig. It rocks gently forward and backwards – offering a bit of give and take as it is filled and emptied. In my view, a sound basis for a good relationship.
